After a busy week, an evening spent on yourself can do more good than the best beauty product. You don’t need an expensive hotel for a spa experience; a little preparation and the products already in your home are enough to create your own spa evening. The important thing is not to rush and to truly give these few hours to yourself.

Set the scene

Half of the spa feeling comes from atmosphere. Dim the lights, light a few candles or switch on a warm lamp. Prepare a calm playlist. Keep a soft robe, clean towels, a herbal tea and a glass of water close by. Turn off phone notifications; this evening is only yours.

1. Start with a hair mask

Hair masks work better the longer they stay on, so apply one first. Smooth a nourishing mask or a hair oil such as argan or coconut onto dry hair. Twist your hair into a bun and wrap it in a shower cap or a warm towel. The mask will do its work during the other steps.

2. Facial care

  • Cleanse: First melt make-up with an oil cleanser, then wash with a gentle cleanser.
  • Steam: Cover your face with a warm, damp towel for a few minutes. It softens and relaxes the skin.
  • Mask: Choose for your skin’s needs: creamy hydrating masks for dry skin, clay masks for oily skin, brightening masks for dull skin. While it works, close your eyes and breathe deeply.
  • Serum and cream: After rinsing the mask, press your serum and moisturiser into the skin with gentle movements.

3. Facial massage

As you apply moisturiser, massage lightly with your fingertips from the centre of the face outwards and upwards. Use small circles between the brows, at the temples and along the jawline. A few minutes of massage releases tension and refreshes the skin.

4. Hands and feet

Fill a basin with warm water, add some salt and a few drops of oil, and soak your feet for ten minutes. Then gently smooth your heels with a foot file and apply a thick cream. Pull on cotton socks and the cream will work overnight. Massage plenty of hand cream into your hands and add a drop of oil to your cuticles.

5. Rinse your hair

Rinse the hair mask thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use a mild shampoo if needed and apply a little conditioner to the ends. Press hair dry with a towel.

6. Wind down

Finish the evening with something calm: a book, a short stretch or simply a warm tea. These last screen-free minutes carry the ritual’s effect all the way to sleep.

A weekly habit

Putting your spa evening on a fixed day of the week turns it into a habit. Sunday evenings are perfect for getting ready for the week ahead. These few hours for yourself are really an investment in your whole week.
